Political activist, Scientist, Philanthropist and Cultural Leader is Recognized for His Benevolence

The International Society for Iranian Studies (ISIS) has benefited from the generosity of a number of people and institutions in organizing its various activities. However, on November 18th in Boston, ISIS recognized one extraordinary man for his unwavering support and humanitarian efforts.
Dr. Akbar Ghahary, an Iranian born American, has been an active member of the Iranian-American community for the last twenty-nine years. His commitment to serving cultural and humanitarian projects has involved him in extensive charitable work with various cultural organizations. He has been a former president of the Persian Cultural and Humanitarian Association, vice-chair and a trustee of the Encyclopedia Iranica Foundation, IAPAC's co-founder, treasurer and a member of its Board of Trustees, and is the co-founder and president of the Persian Cultural Foundation (PCF).
Dr. Ghahary, an executive in the manufacturing sector, is the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Safas Corporation, an equity partner with General Electric Capital Corporation. A member of the American Chemical Society and Society of Plastic Engineers, Dr. Ghahary owns several international patents, including eight U. S. patents, mostly in polymers and advanced composites.
During a special reception held in Dr. Ghahary's honor, scholars, friends and family members from around the world gathered to honor and offer their heartfelt congratulations and words of appreciation for the many contributions Dr. Ghahary has made to the Iranian American community. Dignitaries like ISIS Board President, Dr. Janet Afary and Past President, Dr. Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak spoke very highly of Dr. Ghahary and his commitment to preserving and promoting the Persian cultural heritage in science and technology, art & Literature, medicine and health, music and performing arts, and trade. Dr. Ehsan Yarshater, Director Columbia University's Center for Iranian Studies spoke of Dr. Ghahary's passion and commitment to not only preserving the history of Persian heritage but also to his dedication to passing on this rich heritage to future generations.
Dr. Hamid Akbari, Executive Director of the International Society for Iranian Studies expressed his gratitude to Dr. Ghahary for his generous support of the Fifth and Sixth Biennial Conferences on Iranian Studies. The purpose of the ISIS Biennial Conference is to create an atmosphere where participants come to discuss and review contributions in all fields of Iranian studies, especially new areas of investigation and/or novel approaches to traditional fields. This year's Sixth ISIS Biennial Conference featured more than 300 presentations spread across 80 plus panels.
Dr. Ghahary was presented with the ISIS Humanitarian Award, which was designed by the renowned artist Nasser Ovissi.
