Tirgan 2008 - Tirajeh, 7/21/08 As you may have know, the Canadian-Iranian Centre for Art and Culture, under the able leadership of Mr. Mehrdad Ariannejad, organized a Festival (17-20 July). For a time it was known only as "Yeki bud yeki nabud", but later it came to be better known as the "Tirgan Festival" (in ancient Iran when the name of the month coincided with the name of the day, the occasion called for celebration. For instance, the 16th day of each month was called Mehr; the day Mehr in the month of Mehr was an occasion for a great festival, that of Mehregan. Tirgan occurred on the day Tir in the month of the same name.).

The Festival was a model of careful planning and meticulous execution. A great many artists in a variety of fields from the US, Europe, and even Iran participated. All programs were very well attended; sometimes a large number of people found only standing room.

A large tent was set up for the Encyclopaedia Iranica, as part of the Festival's program. In the tent, apart from the volumes of the Encyclopaedia Iranica, the volumes of the critical edition of the Shahnameh by Dr. Djalal Khaleghi, a number of brochures and posters were displayed. But the real attraction was an exhibition of a series of enlarged photographs related to the Constitutional Period. They belong to Dr. Akbar Ghahary, our Vice-Chairman, who had lent them to the Encyclopaedia for the occasion.

A large crowd visited the tent even though it was raining. Dr. Mansour Bonakdarian, who teaches at the University of Toronto, had spent a great deal of time and care in setting up the photographs, and guided the visitors during the entire Festival, beyond all call of duty and as a service to the Encyclopaedia Iranica.
